Stedelijk ARtours

I have been planning to review the ARtours of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam ever since I first devised the Lego-factor. In short, the Stedelijk AR tours allows you to borrow art of the Stedelijk Museum and put it up wherever you like. As the Stedelijk is mostly closed due to a redesign of their building, it’s a great way to have people interact with their art.

The project uses innovative technology such as QR codes and Layar. Furthermore, they’ve presented the project not only around the museum, but also at the Lowlands festival and the Picnic conference. I missed it on both occasions, but at the Dutch Museum Congress I was finally able to borrow some art and use the ARtours.

The Lego-factor is a completely subjective checklist I made myself to understand why I like certain projects and dislike others. And, to add to the subjectivity, I think the nice people behind the Stedelijk ARtours are amazing. So, whatever you do with this evaluation is entirely up to you;-)

Smart and Smarter by Daniel Y Go on Flickr

How can we use mobile media to engage people in cultural and historical heritage? Last week I co-hosted a hands-on expert meeting dealing with this subject. Our objective: to find one or two pilot solutions that we can develop already.

The meeting followed on the post-MW2010 unconference about mobile games for museums I wrote about two weeks ago. Experts of DEN (Dutch Digital Heritage), the Dutch museum association (NMV), the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam and Beeld en Geluid together with host the Museum of National History, came up with a set of guidelines for pilot projects. We used user profiling and a tour through The Hague to develop these guidelines and a handful of ideas.

Our findings below represent what we think a mobile platform for cultural and historical heritage should look like, using contemporary technology.

Mobile augmented reality to turn our country into a museum

LayarLast Friday I met Maarten Lens-Fitzgerald from SPRXMobile. He gave me a demonstration of a new application they built, named Layar. Layar is, according to their website, a free application for your mobile phone which shows what is around you by displaying real time digital information on top of reality though the camera of the mobile phone.

Currently it’s only available on Android phones. In the near future, however, it might become available for the iPhone as well.

Layar is a browser. On top of the image of the camera in a mobile phone, this browser displays an information layer. For instance, the location of all ATMs around you. A small dot shows you the direction and the distance of an ATM. Once you select one ATM, you can get additional information about this ATM. Also, you can call a map to see how to get to this ATM from your current position. Read the rest of this entry »
